Red Box Review— The Ghost Writer
The Ghost Writer ( 2010—- 128 mins) E. McGregor, P. Brosnan, K. Catrall, T. Hutton
The Ghost writer is a political drama about a writer (McGregor) who is hired to be a ghost writer for the former prime minister’s memoirs. As he gets deeper into the writing and uncovering more and more on the prime minister (Brosnan) he discovers a vast array of secrets that put his life in danger. What I just described in 2 sentences they take 2 hours + to come up with the story and bring it about. Like more suspense dramas they throw a few twists and turns in there but it’s just slow. If I wasn’t forced to be awake at work to watch this movie I definitely can see myself falling asleep while watching it. It was fairly interesting at first but it’s all just blah blah and drawn out. As with most Polanski films they have to put the ending in an ambiguous place which might somewhat works but feels forced as well. Obviously that sounds a bit odd to say but needless to say I wasn’t totally a fan of it as well. It has some usual political undertones which I am never in favor of in his films as well. Brosnan is good as the dignitary which is not much of a stretch for his usual acting, and Cattrell is decent but it’s just uncomfortable seeing her try a British accent.
Verdict—> There’s not really a huge reason to grab this movie. If you have to see a McGregor film you can pick a bunch others that will make you happy but hey grab it if you need a substitute for Ambien. Can’t really recommend this one folks.
