You know it’s going to be a long night when your lace rips pre-game…
Finally it’s the beginning of the fall season of Ice-hockey in the beer leagues I play in on Sunday (and another league on Mondays). Since I work the night hours and obviously cannot play on my weeks on I play 2 nights on my weeks off to make up the exercise (and lost beer swigging with the guys!). Any-hoo, tonight was my 1st game of this season and naturally my luck has it that our game is the LATE game of the night. So 10:45pm we start. While getting dressed the omen happens, I broke a skate lace. Never a good thing. Why? Normally I would say b/c I am superstitious, but at this stage of the game, and since it’s just the old regular season, it was more because I didn’t want to get on the ice late. I can really care less about the whole mojo of it. Also, being the late game and apparently most of our team are either drunk after Sunday football, or whiny little bitches who don’t want to play so late at night (and you know who you are) we only had 6 skaters and the goalie. For the math challenged or hockey challenged out there, that’s 1 damn sub the whole game.
Luckily we had some of the young guns show up and 1 of em just loves to play iron-man hockey and didn’t come off at all (more rest for the rest of us haha) so it was tiring but could have been worse. Even better, we happened to win the game despite my complete lack of hands out there on D. I am usually no threat at all to score from the point ( a normal pane of glass wouldn’t be afraid of me on a good day), but tonight I couldn’t do a whole lot right with the puck. Passes going off me, flubbing passes… just yuk. Granted I don’t claim to be Duncan Keith out there but normally I am one of the better defense 1st D men we have (or maybe I just suck and I can leave it at that!).
But the good highlight for said GeekJock was while moving up to F with less then 30 seconds left up by one, and on the PP, I let one of the young guns play D for the heavy shot. So with one of our guys (Johnny Cakes) pressing the break out pass behind the net, the D-man either didn’t see me in the slot, or he saw how shitty I was playing and figured I wouldn’t get the pass anyway, and he tried to go vaguely up the middle with a pass. I picked it off, skated a step in and slid the puck over to Johnny who slapped it home pretty easy to put us up by 2 with 15 or so seconds left and they just basically ran out the clock.
Normally I wouldn’t tell pointless stories but hey, I get points in hockey less then I get lucky with a certain someone so it’s always a good day for any points
Also this weekend was our annual Kappa Psi Golf tourney. It’s always a good time. We get to see some brothers you don’t normally get to see, raise some money for a scholarship fund for a brother who unfortunately passed away when she was a student a few years ago (It’s a professional Frat so co-ed), and hey best ball tourneys are just plain fun. Now golf is one of the few things worse then I play hockey, mainly b/c of my damn baseball/hockey swing entrenched in my head. I am constantly trying to overcome that in my swing. Well, that and the fact that I play all of 2 times a year MAX. Generally both are best ball, which us hackers love. We had a great time and none of us were very good so we all contributed swings here and there (also a plus). But, again, I will cover the highlight of my tourney which came on the last hole and last shot! We were just winding down, the sun was starting to set and we were all tired. We were sitting 100 feet from the pin (no shit!). I got up there and lined it up a bit. It was a weird green, uphill down hill then up again. I looked at it did my best to judge it and BAM, took the shot. Obviously I wouldn’t be telling this story if I didn’t sink the put, but my God it was fricking a shot to remember! A great end to a great day. And yes I lost my share of balls as well.
Enjoy your week everybody
GJ out.
