Red Box Review: Harry Brown
Harry Brown (2009– 103 mins) Michael Caine
Michael Caine is Harry Brown, an ex military man who doesn’t have much left in his life. His wife is in terminal condition in the hospital, his best friend is constantly being harassed by the local gangs, and he himself has a nasty case of emphysema. When the two people he loves most in the world are taken from him it puts him in a real depressed state of mind. All it takes is a little shove by one of the local gang members who took his friend from him, and the lack of the police to prosecute the killers, which all push Harry over the edge. He then becomes the vigilante trying to find justice.
The difference here then in other movies, is Harry is not a super hero and isn’t invincible. He’s an old man who can, at times, barely breathe. All he has going is his intelligence and his former training. It seems like a good plot idea but it’s done just a bit too slow and not completely enough. The whole movie is shot as almost as in a post-apocalyptic world. Again decent point but still not done to a great end. It’s not that I didn’t like the end or it was a bad ending it’s just that it all just felt meh. I think the premise could have been brought about a bit better b/c I just felt like something was missing. As usual I can’t understand thick accents at all when in movies which detracts a bit too.
Verdict—> It’s not a great date/family/group movie. It’s really only for those people who love Caine, or those who enjoy the movies that are different. I don’t think I would recommend this to too many people. Not awful but just not much better then an OK watch. I expected a bit more from it.
