Red Box Review– MacGruber (2010) #Redbox
MacGruber (2010- 90 mins) Will Forte, KristenWiig, R. Phillipe, Val Kilmer
There has been a lot of movies over the years that have been based on skits on SNL. Some good, Night at the Roxburry, some bad, It’s Pat. There is a few things that I want to get out there before I go on. First, I am a huge SNL apologist. I have always loved SNL (even if they get too political at times and I almost always fast forward past the opening skit the last 2 -4 years) even thru the crap years I have found some good things to like about them. Often even a crap show has one or two real funny skits and the DVR is amazing for this as well. The other big thing is it’s no secret that when everyone in the world hates or loves something I will often go into said thing with the opposite view initially. It’s a bad habit but eh I’m human. Take this movie for instance. It’s no secret how the whole world said it was bad. But before I passed judgement I looked at who is in it. Forte,Wiig and Kilmer are among my favorite actors and all have some just great comedic minds. So I figured it couldn’t be all that bad with these people in it, and they had to be able to find some way of making the story funny and entertaining. And yet, it’s not. It’s a god-awful pile of monkey crap. I cannot believe how bad this movie was. I could not wait to get it over and get onto the next movie of the night. I even had more fun working then watching this debauchery.
Ok I’ll cover the “story” a little bit. MacGruber is a government super agent who comes out of seclusion to catch his arch-nemesis Dieter Von Cunth (Kilmer) who has a nuclear warhead and is hell bent on setting it off in Washington DC. Simple easy enough, sure. We all know MAcGruber is a misfit, sure no problem, and he’s an idiot. I get it. What I don’t get is how bad the script is and how bad the language is. Again, I am a guy, and I can take language of all kinds. After all I play hockey and the stuff that is said in a locker room would make most people either blush or vomit, but this movie just goes too far at times even for me. Of course it has some funny parts and lines and if I was playing poker or hanging with the guys drinking at 2am this movie might not seem too bad. But watching it anywhere else is just not a good thing.
Verdict—> This movie is so bad if anyone spends even a dollar on it I want to come to your house and club you myself.
